Tell him to turn on one switch for 15 minutes. Then tell him to turn another switch on, and keep it on. He should just leave the third. When he goes upstairs, the bulb that is on and warm is from the first switch. The bulb that is on and cold is from the second, and the bulb that is off and cold is from the third.
