The JSO Sparrow 2

The Sparrow 2 first stage automatically lands itself near the launch site. In 10 flights, It had 9 successful recoveries. The second stage continiues to an accurate orbit. In 10 flights, it was always within 2 km of the target orbit. The Sparrow 2 can also carry payloads to many different orbit hights and inclinations.

The JSO Phoenix 2.2 Crew Capsule

On top of this Sparrow 2 is the JSO Phoenix 2.2 Crew Capsule. It has a full interior with windows and a hatch. There is also a launch escape system.

Sparrow 2 Phoenix 2.2 Capabilities

  • Reach any orbit from 100 km to 350 km accurately
  • Fly with any target heading, making it easy to reach most space stations
  • Carry 6 astronauts to space

How to use the Sparrow 2

Launch from the launch pad on the stock system. Follow the prompts to choose your orbit hight and target heading. After that, the Sparrow 2 will get to orbit and land the first stage on it’s own. After landing the first stage, it will switch back to the upper stage. This will be the only other time you are needed for the flight. It will tell you to activate AG 7. After doing this, the Sparrow 2 will finish the orbit on it’s own.

In case of failure

Failure during the first stage

Activate group 5 to abort. The launch escape system is not perfect though, so it may not work. Make sure to only abort during the first stage.

Landing failure

If the Sparrow 2 first stage command chip explodes on landing, you will need to manually switch to the upper stage. Then the flight will continiue like normal.

Thanks For Using Sparrow 2!

there is a bug with the launch escape system. You will need to manually throttle up and change pitch after pressing abort. This will be fixed when I post Sparrow 2 Phoenix 3

@kittman Thanks! And I am hoping to learn more about vizzy so I can land at the site accurately. I have plans to make an even bigger Sparrow, which will be the Sparrow 3. After that I plan to work on the Sparrow 4, which will be a Sparrow 2 with the ability to land on a landing pad or maybe even a drone ship.

@JSO18 I'm really happy to see the Phoenix 2.2 capsule spread its metaphorical wings and finally fly! When you first posted just the Phoenix 2.2 capsule, I'd tried launching it on different boosters with no real success. But no more! Sparrow 2 is a beautiful (and perfect) launch vehicle for Phoenix.
A couple of Sparrow booster returns were well within 10km of the launchpad. One was just 3.2km away! The rest have been close, i.e. none were waaay far away from the launch complex. One thing I did note was all returned boosters (and I've already flown your craft multiple times) have landed short of the launch complex, yet none of my flights had any issues making a safe landing, even if it was running on fumes during the actual landing!
So.. a question for ya... are you looking into a RTLS booster that can return to one of the landing pads? I know there are a lot of factors to nail a landing on LP1 (or even better, LP2... since almost no-one uses LP2 for landing)... factors like the amount of remaining fuel, launch inclination, an occasional UFO, a random Kraken or two, and, of course, the biggest scourge of rocket science: good ol' gravity.
You're doing a great job and its been cool to watch the evolution of your crafts and vizzy skills that have ultimately led to your Sparrow2 + Phoenix 2.2 stack. You should be quite proud of your work. :D
Please keep 'em coming!! I'd love to see more of your work.

@Thorne Thanks! I posted the capsule separately, so I do not expect people to upvote this because of the capsule. I posted this mainly to show the rocket and the vizzy, but I added the capsule so people can use this to launch crew.
