Auto Credit Based on JSO18's Sparrow 3 V0.8

JSO Sparrow 3

The Sparrow 3 is a reuseable and automatic heavy lift launcher by JSO. The booster returns to the launch site to be caught by the launch tower after sending the upper stage to space, where it will continue flying to orbit.

To use

Launch from any launch pad and raise the throttle. The craft will do the rest.

Improvements from the last version

  • Completley new ascent and landing programs with higher efficiency, acuracy, and consistency than the previous programs
  • Launch tower/booster catch tower
  • Tweaks to the old programs that are still being used

Features to come in the next versions

Note: none of these are guranteed, just goals that I have
  • The tower will either set down to dock to the booster after it lands to prevent it from clipping through the tower after switching away
  • Orbit customizability: ex. Orbit height, inclination, etc.
  • Better reliability: while testing, I noticed that every once in a while, the booster misses the tower or hits it and blows up.

    cool rocket

    First, awesome build!!!
    A couple of questions:
    1) why are there really small watertanks in the middle of the rocket?
    2) why are the "tanks" that make the launch base filled with Karalox (seems dangerous) Should they be filled with water like the suppression system?
    3) I also see the booster bump into the second stage after MECO
    4) I also see the rocket landing on the wrong side of the tower. How are you guiding to the tower?

@JSO18 I figured it out, I had stock engine overhaul on

@Bishobe I haven’t really played the game in a few months, and sorry for the long wait for a response. I don’t really know what the problem is but my best guess would be that maybe the new update changed the weight of fuel? Check the weight of the fuel tank on top, and try making it a little smaller. I am sorry I don’t have a better response, I haven’t played the game in a while and I don’t have time to find out what the problem is right now.

when i try to launch the unmodified craft it tells me the payload is too heavy

@JSO18 I’m also part of the IAAR and I say with pride that this has to be the best reusable booster I’ve seen

@Profighter159 The only other thing I could think of that would affect the stage separation so drastically would be frame rate. Was your frame rate low during the separation? Sometimes with low frame rates the calculations do not happen often enough and random unintended things can happen.

@JSO18 It was on high physics, I'll see if I can experiment with different settings to find a cause.

@Profighter159 thanks for the feedback, I will try to fix that for the next version. Until then, try running it on high physics settings if it was not already on high physics.

There seems to be a problem for me when MECO happens where the 2 crafts aren't separated enough, do a little dance and an engine on the second stage is busted, leaving the craft dancing and super-high speeds and the first stage crashing because it isn't triggering the switch.

@xXFrankyJoeXx You did nothing wrong, the program is just not perfect, so it does not work 100% of the time. I am working on better consistency for the next version.

I don’t know what i did wrong but not only did the tower explode and the rocket, but I switched to the second stage and it fell out of orbit and exploded

@KellyNyanbinary Thanks for the tips, and the circularization is a very old program of mine because I have never really cared that much about it, and I put all of my effort into the booster program. Hopefully eventually I will have a better circularization program.

The booster catch is very cool. It's unfortunate SR2 despawned it. Circularization on the other hand took forever.

Also, the booster exhaust pressure is much higher than ambient sea level pressure, maybe lower that?

Woah, nice catch! I have seen how reliable your rocket is and how it can drive down the cost of spaceflight. I would like you to join the Atmospheric Satellite Reconnaissance System program. @ISX and @RocketScienceCo are launching too, with @ISX launching on @iSpace and @AshtvinayakAerospace launchers and @RocketScienceCo launching on their in house launch vehicles. Join now!
