I know ion engines arent really known for its amazing thrust and they are pretty realistic how they are right now but in terms of gameplay there is no reason to use them. I'd suggest bumping up the thrust to about 100N and decreasing the amount of electricity it needs to something like 100kW to make it somewhat reasonable to use the Ion engine.

@HorizonsTechnologies this suggestion is almost 3 years old now so i dont expect anything to change but i still think ion engines make no sense how they are from a gameplay standpoint, if you wanna argue about realism, there are plenty of other things to talk about so it doesnt seem too unreasonable to make ion engines worth using. Not to directly compare the two games but ksps ion engines are orders of magnitude better in terms of energy input to thrust output and a lot of people still find them too weak to be bothered using them and with carrer mode aproaching on the horizon i think it would makes sense to have a reason to unlock them in a playthrough other than if you wanna torture yourself for an hour making dozens of small burns for minimal to no gain over small chemical rockets.

@Insanity Ion engines are not ideal for short-distance burns. And using ion engines, you use those for tiny probes. I recommend having a very small xenon gas tank and a large battery. Because the batteries run out fast sometimes.

I think they are good as they are. Useful for small corrections needed to encounter the other planets. In fact they are comparatively better than the other engines, which are purposely inefficient because making them perform like real-life engines would make the game too easy. Real ion engines have similar Isp and power consumptions.

I wrote an essay a long time ago persuading Jundroo to nerd it, and they did.

@Bmcclory i cant really come up with a desingn that works well with them. For example i built a craft that got a 250kg ion probe to droo orbit. From there it would have taken me 70 periapsis burns just to get an encounter with the moon. After each burn i had to time warp several in game days to recharge the batteries with solar panels. I think the electricity needed to run them compared to the amount you can recharge with reasonably sized solar panels is too high.

You can always xml mod them, you know.
Plus there possibly coming new rocket adjustable engines =)

How fast can you time warp with the engines on? maybe just crank it up.
