I have a station I am working on, and I am curious to see what is your favourite fuel types for orbital engines, and on your rocket in general. I want to be able to to refuel with it to a variety of different crafts this community makes.

2,887 Gen3ralInterstel1ar3.0 years agoFor me, I use Kerolox, Methalox, Solid. Methalox is used when I need to have a higher thrust to weight or ISP, Kerolox is generally used when I need to be able to make long burns from sea level to orbit. Solid for when you just have to say ' ' We're a go for launch, no matter what!' '. Other than that, Xenon is what I generally use for having to make long burns outside of an atmosphere between planets, mostly for capture burns though. I guess I just blend in with the rest of the community when it comes to fuel types most used. 😅 But Going from a realism standpoint, I would more than likely choose either Cryo-Kerolox, or Methalox. The latter of the two being chosen when I would want to avoid coking in the engines, because reusability of a rocket is just epic.

76 LunarArc3.0 years agoDepends on the size of the craft, for large things I actually prefer going pure hydrogen in the nuclear engine (Not super refuellable bc not super popular in community). DON'T MAKE IT PART OF YOUR CRAFT INTENDED TO USE OUT OF ORBIT, it's like trying to take off with ion engines. For mid sized things I use a Kerlox first stage, and Hydrolox everything else. For small things I experiment and have fun.

27.3k Zenithspeed3.0 years agomethalox is just balanced between the easy storage but high density of kerolox and the high efficiency but low density of hydrolox, that's why many of us use methalox because it doesn't have major tradeoffs, it's balanced

the update probably changed that x_x

0 Nicman+1 3.0 years ago@Zenithspeed Ok, I plan on adding a lot to this station so I have room to add various types, but I want it to be able to have functionality while still in construction.

27.3k Zenithspeed3.0 years agogenerally methalox (thats what i always use personally), but also many other people use methalox in general, hydrolox for bigger crafts, and xenon for ion engine people, you should also probably add kerolox just in case

hydrolox is the worst because it has a very long delay when you kill throttle
