AC-01 Carrier
The AC-01 is an air-launched aircraft designed to transport and release experimental vehicles at high altitude. Its primary mission is to serve as a launch platform for the Atlas-IX Aurora, (the three variants being Aurora-A, Aurora-B and Aurora-T) the AX-21 Tempest (under development), and experimental cargo over the fuselage and inside of his cargo bay, such as stages of the Atlas-VIII Heavy, enabling subsonic and orbital flights from approximately 10 km altitude and at high initial speed.
The launch system significantly reduces the fuel consumption of the transported vehicle and allows for higher speeds and altitudes than a conventional runway launch.
It also features a JATO system (Jet Assisted Take Off for maximum weight loads or short takeoffs.
The AC-01 is optimized for stability during transport, safe vehicle release, and return to the space center after mission completion.
