Explorer 6 or 1959-Delta 1 was NASA's first successful scientific satellite, launched in 1959 to study the electrical and magnetic fields around Earth and to test devices for scanning cloud cover. Over its 60 days of operation, it provided the most comprehensive data up to date of the Van Allen radiation belts and the geomagnetic field, as well as the first televised cloud cover pictures.
