The Atlas-IX Proto-B was the second prototype of the Aurora program, built at a 1:1.7 scale to integrate chemical engines and validate the vehicle's performance in atmospheric climb and at high speeds. Its tests confirmed the aerodynamic efficiency of the design and established the basis for the mass distribution and structural configuration used in the operational versions of the Aurora.
A variant with variable-geometry wings was tested to optimize performance in different flight regimes. Although it offered aerodynamic advantages, it was discarded due to its complexity, additional weight, and operating costs, giving way to the fixed-wing configuration adopted in the final Aurora.
