Beijing-1
The Beijing-1, also known as "Beijing No. 1", was a landmark aircraft in Chinese aviation history. It was the first passenger aircraft designed and built independently in China.
Developed by faculty and students of the Beijing Institute of Aeronautics (now Beihang University,or BUAA) during the "Great Leap Forward" period, it was completed in an astonishing 100 days as a national tribute project. It successfully made its maiden flight on September 24, 1958.
This twin-engine, low-wing monoplane was designed to carry 8 passengers for short-range transport. While only two prototypes were ever built and it did not enter mass production, the Beijing-1 remains a powerful symbol of China's early ambition and technological self-reliance in aviation.
The sole surviving prototype is now preserved at the Beijing Aeronautics and Astronautics Museum in BUAA.
