Early version of the P51 Mustang, commonly used before 1944. The B model was the first mustang to be equipped with the famous Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, giving the mustang the high altitude performance needed to escort the mass formations of bombers as they pounded Germanys manufacturing. The B model is easily destinguished from the later D model by its “bird cage” canopy and sloped back. Some pilots preferred the B model over the D model because it had a slight advantage in strait line speed and maneuverability in exchange for better visibility and two more .50cal machine guns in the wings. This model is indicitive of the 335th fighter wing during the summer of 1943.
