The Mirage 2000 was developed by Dassault Aviation for the Armée de l'Air in replacement of the Avion program of Combat Futur. Dassault Aviation aimed to meet the French needs and to repeat the commercial and international success achieved by the Mirage III, competing with the American F-16, as it lost the competition in Belgium, Denmark and Holland precisely to the American fighter.
