The "He 162" was a single-engine, jet-powered fighter aircraft fielded by the German Luftwaffe in the final months of World War II.
Design and construction: Under the "Emergency Fighter Program" of late 1944, the He 162 was developed and built in an astonishingly short time—the design was finalized in September and the first prototype flew in December. Due to severe material shortages, the aircraft was primarily constructed of wood.
Performance: Despite its rushed development, the He 162 was a remarkably fast aircraft. Post-war test flights by Allied pilots praised its handling, but noted that it was a challenging aircraft for novice pilots.
Operational history: The He 162 saw very limited combat action before the war ended in May 1945. It was intended for mass production and to be flown by hastily trained Hitler Youth pilots, but its complexity meant more experienced pilots were needed. Many He 162s were captured by the Allies and used for evaluation.
