Some rockets in real life use this separation method. They separate the booster and the thruster(s) will push the booster away from the core stage.
This separation thruster is powerful enough to clear some heavy boosters from the core stage. The booster could fall onto the core stage and explode if you don't use this separation thruster.
You can change the length of the fuel tank and the radius. But not the engine and the fuel.
