The Proto-C is the first Aurora program unit built to a 1:1 scale, designed as a testbed for the spacecraft's final systems. This variant introduced the following for the first time in the Aurora line: A complete RCS system for fine control in orbit Reinforced gyroscopes for stability during high-precision maneuvers An experimental thermonuclear engine for extended thrust and future interplanetary missions The vehicle was optimized to operate in both atmosphere and vacuum, and was used for: High-speed suborbital tests Reentry heat shield validation Microgravity attitude control tests Currently, the Proto-C is retired from service and on display at the Space Center museum, alongside the other prototypes that contributed to the development of the operational Aurora.
