The Proto-C is the first Aurora program unit built to a 1:1 scale, designed as a testbed for the spacecraft's final systems. This variant introduced the following for the first time in the Aurora line: A complete RCS system for fine control in orbit Reinforced gyroscopes for stability during high-precision maneuvers An experimental thermonuclear engine for extended thrust and future interplanetary missions The vehicle was optimized to operate in both atmosphere and vacuum, and was used for: High-speed suborbital tests Reentry heat shield validation Microgravity attitude control tests Currently, the Proto-C is retired from service and on display at the Space Center museum, alongside the other prototypes that contributed to the development of the operational Aurora.
Flight Controls / Controls:
Slider 1 → Jet Engine Throttle
Slider 2 → Flaps
Slider 3 → Winglets / Variable Wing Tips
Takeoff:
Flaps: 30–40%
Throttle: 100%
Rotate at ~120–140 m/s
Ascent:
Retract flaps gradually
Maintain ~15–20° pitch
Activate chemical engines when reaching high altitude / Mach 1.5+
Landing:
Deploy flaps before approach
Target approach speed: 140–150 m/s
Use brakes + reverse thrust after touchdown
