A brief history
Development:
The idea of creating a strategic intercontinental aircraft emerged in the late 1960s in the USSR. Three design bureaus were involved in the development: Myasishchev, Sukhoi, and Tupolev.
In 1972, the Tupolev Design Bureau, together with the Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute, began developing a future bomber.
In 1975, a draft design of the bomber appeared, which was approved at the end of 1977. The future aircraft received the index Tu-160.
Production:
In 1984, the Tu-160 was launched into mass production at the Kazan Aviation Plant. The first serial aircraft took off on October 10, 1984.
Tests:
On December 18, 1981, the first prototype aircraft, piloted by the crew of B. I. Veremey, took off for the first time from the airfield of LII MAP in the city of Zhukovsky.
Since October 1984, flight tests were already conducted on two aircraft. Two prototypes and four serial aircraft took part in joint state tests.
Operation:
In April 1987, the Tu-160 began to enter service with the 184th Guards Regiment (Priluki, Ukraine). The first flights took place on May 12, 1987.
Officially, the Tu-160 was adopted into service in modern Russia in 2005.
As of 2022, 16 Tu-160s were in service with the Long-Range Aviation of the Russian Aerospace Forces.
