The XB-70 Valkyrie was an experimental supersonic bomber developed in the early 1960s by North American Aviation for the United States Air Force. Designed to be the ultimate high-speed, high-altitude strategic bomber, it was capable of cruising at speeds over Mach 3. Powered by six General Electric YJ93 engines and featuring a distinctive delta wing with folding wingtips, the XB-70 used aerodynamic compression lift to enhance efficiency at supersonic speeds. Intended to carry nuclear payloads deep into enemy territory during the Cold War, the Valkyrie was ultimately canceled before reaching production, largely due to the emergence of surface-to-air missile threats and shifting strategic priorities.
