As the A-1 Skyraider was retiring, a jet powered replacement was ordered. Ed Heinemann of Douglas Aircraft corporation opted for a low cost, low complexity design. The XA-4D prototype not only fulfillled all the Navy's requirements, but breached them. The aircraft was 20% cheaper and 50% lighter than required, and won the contract effortlessly. It fought in Vietnam and the Falklands, where it was manned by the Argentinian pilots.
