JUICE

The mission

ESA’s Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer, Juice, will make detailed observations of the giant gas planet and its three large ocean-bearing moons – Ganymede, Callisto and Europa – with a suite of remote sensing, geophysical and in situ instruments. The mission will characterise these moons as both planetary objects and possible habitats, explore Jupiter’s complex environment in depth, and study the wider Jupiter system as an archetype for gas giants across the Universe.

The Rocket

Ariane 5

The Launch

Launch: 13 April 2023

Launch location: Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana

Launch vehicle: Ariane 5

Destination: Jupiter system

Launch and trajectory

JUICE will be launched on 13 April 2023 on an Ariane 5 launch vehicle from the Guiana Space Centre. Following the launch, there will be multiple planned gravity assists to put JUICE on a trajectory to Jupiter: a flyby of the Earth–Moon system in August 2024, Venus in August 2025, second flyby of Earth in September 2026, and a final third flyby of Earth in January 2029.

JUICE will pass through the asteroid belt twice. A flyby of the asteroid 223 Rosa has been proposed, and would occur in October 2029.

The fisrts Flyby

After 1 orbits around the sun, the spacecraft will finally make its first gravity assist fly-by on Earth. This maneuver is intended to get a little accumulated momentum, to reduce journey time.

The Second Flyby

After one more orbit around the Sun, the ship will enter a route to perform a new Flyby, only this time on Venus! It will be her first, on another celestial body besides the Moon.

Hello again, earthlings!

After the third orbit around the Sun, the probe will come back to say hello to us once more, in a second Flyby on Earth, to build up even more speed.

Goodbye forever!

Well, this is where JUICE's visits to our celestial body will end, because this time, the Flyby will take the probe directly to the planet Jupiter. We will prepare the farewell with great affection!

Minha nova casa, finalmente!

Here, finally JUICE will be in Jupiter, after 8 years of travel, the probe will reach Jupiter, where it will be just starting work. After arriving at Jupiter, the probe will start a new stage of burns, orbital corrections, and Flyby in the Galilean Lodges, to start its scientific mission. Oh how I wanted to go into detail about these Flybys on the moons! However, this would take up a lot of space in the post and you would get sick of me! haha.

It's been a long journey!

After the end of the mission, the European Space Agency plans to crash the probe on the surface of the Moon Ganymede in a simple tribute to the legacy of the probe... Goodbye JUICE!
