Atmospheric Transport Plane 8 Mk.1

"Originally conceived as a six engine, variable geometry VTOL SSTO, the 'Midzi' didn't exactly become the ambitious dream NEAI proposed."

desc

The OTP-8 project was started by the NSSP's third request for a SSTO plane able to carry a cargo and people to an orbiting space station. NEA Industries (or NEAI) proposed a VTOL which later developed into the aircraft known within the company as 'Midzi'. Within three months of the request NEAI had a working prototype in the form of a small, unmaned drone. As usual, the UAV showed potential, and although the NSSP wasn't so excited about the VTOL feature it won the development contract. The NSSP approved the development of a full scale demonstrator, and for the next two years NEAI experimented with various designs and shapes.
In the wake of the catastrophic Avalon Space Station disaster and subsequent collapse of the NSSP all development on the Midzi was paused. In the months that followed more and more satellites were destroyed by debris and all space related project throughout the world ground to a halt. The Midzi program was shut down when the promised funding disappeared. Like many of NEAI's other failed SSTO programs it was later salvaged and redesigned as a supersonic corporate jet/passenger plane. The entire aircraft was shrunk, the VTOL systems were completely removed, and a third engine was added in the tail. Seven years after the commencement of the Midzi program the ATP-8 emerged as a sleek, sharp jet with a respectable range and high speeds. It dominated the Pacific and coastal routes, but unable to operate inland efficiently due to sound and speed regulations. Although not official, the ATP-8 is recognized as 'Midzi' throughout the world due to the original project name.
This Midzi is flown by Janea Airlines, which operates the largest fleet of civilian supersonic aircraft in the world.
