Sputnik 1 was the first artificial satellite sent into orbit around the Earth. It was launched from the Baikonur cosmodrome by the Soviet Union reaching a low Earth elliptical orbit on 4 October 1957; it remained in orbit for three weeks before its batteries ran out, then continued to orbit for another two months before re-entering the atmosphere and destroying itself. It consisted of a polished metal sphere 58 cm in diameter with four external radio antennas to transmit the impulses.
