Horizon was scheduled to launch 1 day earlier than its intended launch day, but scrubbed at T-5:00 minutes due to weather problems. However a few hours later would be a better chance of launch, so Horizon was kept fueled with a 15% chance of launch. Nevertheless flight directors verified Go for Launch at T:50 seconds. At T-4 seconds all 19 Point engines throttled up and Horizon soared into the sky. There was going to be a engine out test on IFT-1,but it was moved last minute to IFT-2.
Horizon approached Max-Q, throttling down its engines, where they throttled back up 24 seconds later. Around 2.2 minutes into flight came Hotstaging, and it went perfectly. The 12 outer engines shut off, then the center 6 and then the ship engines ignited.B2 separated from S4 nominally.
B2 turned around and started up its boostback burn, igniting the 6 center engines, while the Ship contined on into space.After that the booster orientated itself for reentry. Once that was completed, Ship 4 became the first Horizon Aerospace launch vehicle to make it to orbit on its first try.At 95km B2 ignited its engines for a entry burn.However the landing burn didnt go as well, right as the 7 engines ignited for its landing burn, engine 6 flamed out. But B2 was able to compensate for it by throttling up the remaining engines even more,pushing them to their limits, B2 landed successfully in the gulf near the droo space center.
The ship deployed its test payload(approximately 173 tons) into LEO.
After that it deorbited and made it to reentry.Apon coming up to reentry, S4 was facing the wrong way,but reoriented it self before the plasma came in.S4 barely made it through reentry, taking damage on about every part of the vehicle.At 800 meters above the ocean, its 4 Sea level engines ignited, flipping it upright, for a softwater landing.This was the first time since S1 where it landed successfully.
This is a huge milestone for Horizon Aerospace's team.
The FAA requiring a small mishap investigation on the loss of the engine on the landing and why it was normal for the rest of the flight, but they did congratulate us on our success. IFT-2 will be in a couple of weeks.
