The “Little Boy”

“Little Boy" was the codename for the first atomic bomb used in warfare, dropped on Hiroshima, Japan, on August 6, 1945. It was a gun-type nuclear weapon that used highly enriched uranium-235. The bomb's design involved firing one piece of uranium into another to initiate a chain reaction. The resulting explosion had a force equivalent to approximately 15 kilotons of TNT.

Design:

"Little Boy" was a gun-type weapon, meaning it used a gun-barrel mechanism to fire a subcritical mass of uranium into another subcritical mass to create a supercritical mass and trigger a nuclear explosion.

Components:

The bomb contained about 140 pounds of uranium-235, with a target and a projectile, each containing a subcritical mass.

Detonation:

It detonated at an altitude of about 1,900 feet above Hiroshima, creating a powerful blast and fireball.

Effects:

The explosion instantly killed an estimated 70,000 people, and more than 100,000 died by the end of 1945 from injuries and radiation sickness. The blast destroyed two-thirds of Hiroshima.
