Ares I Crew Launch Vehicle Replica

Ares I Image

Introduction

This is my replica of the proposed Ares-I rocket! This rocket was planned for NASA's Constellation Program until cancelled. It was intended to replace the Space Shuttle and used some Space Shuttle parts as a result. Only the test vehicle, Ares I-X, was ever launched.

About the Rocket

The first stage would be a 5 segment Solid Rocket Booster derived from the 4 segment Space Shuttle Solid Rocket Boosters.

The second stage would have a J-2X engine. This was powered by Liquid Hydrogen and Liquid Oxygen and was derived from the original J-2 Engine from the Apollo program.

The payload was planned to be the Orion Crew Exploration Vehicle (which is still in development and testing despite the Constellation program being cancelled), which has the crew capsule and a service module.

General Information

I tried to keep the proportions of this rocket as accurate as possible. In order to do that while making it functional, I had to clip fuel tanks together to add extra Delta-V. Due to interstage limiations, the adapter/interstage between the first stage and second stage is a bit off, but it works. My favorite part of the rocket is the large Solid Rocket Booster first stage. I am very happy with how it looks (especially with the segmentation). I was also able to include a lot of detail, even the Systems Tunnel on the side of the booster. Overall, I'm proud of my replica, especially considering this is my second rocket!
