Thor-Agena A Introduction

Thor-Agena was a family of orbital launch vehicles. The rockets used the Thor core stage built by Douglas and the Agena second stage built byheed. They were thus cousins of the more famous Thor-Delta which gave rise to the Delta family of rockets.

KH-1(keyhole-1)

KH-1 (Keyhole-1) was the first of the Corona program's spy satellites, and the first recon satellite to be built. The satellite itself was named Discoverer. KH-1 was equipped with a panoramic camera built by Fairchild Corporation, which was capable of taking with a ground resolution of 12.9 m, and a return capsule to hold the film. After the pictures were taken, the capsule separated from the satellite and was caught mid-air by an Air Force plane after it opened its parachute, to prevent it from being captured by the enemy. If the recovery failed, a salt plug in the's base would dissolve in seawater, and the sensitive data inside the capsule would sink to the bottom of the ocean along with the capsule. However, in 194, a Venezuelan farmer still picked up a failed capsule in his own farmland. After this, all capsules were cancelled from the outside "Top Secret" label, but instead to "Return to U.S. Government for reward" written in eight languages.

Following the successful tests of Discoverer 1 (which did not carry a or a capsule, and was only used to test the satellite structure), and Discoverer 2 and 3 (which did not carry cameras but carried capsules, and were to test the technology of recoverable satellites), the United States launched 8 KH-1 satellites, 3 of which failed to reach orbit due to rocket launch failures, the other 5 satellites also failed to recover the film. For this reason, the United States had to launch two more satellites without cameras but only with capsules (Discoverer 2 and 13) to further verify the feasibility of aerial recovery. After that, the ninth KH-1 satellite finally successfully recovered the film. KH-1- was also the only satellite among the 10 KH-1 satellites that successfully recovered the film.
