With the amount of delays the Sunrise lander experienced before launch, we were not expecting it to land on the first try, but it somehow did. However prior to the final landing burn, a leak was discovered in the Oxygen Tank, which ending up cuttting the landing burn around 18 seconds shorter than it was designed to.
The leak caused the lander's engine to shut down at a altitude of 58 feet. Sunrise did survive the impact on the lunar surface, but at the expense of one of the rovers being crushed. The other rover disconnected from the lander at the moment of impact, allowing it to continue its mission.
With the lander's batteries and its solar panels still upright, we are expecting it to last until the end of January. The exact reason for the leak is still unknown at this time, but will be fixed before the Sunrise 2 mission sometime late this year.
