Redneck Van Buggy Thing

The genesis of the Redneck Van Buggy Thing began with a decrepit old U-Haul van. The van ran just fine when parked in Cletus’ front yard 5 years ago. For those five long years, the van sat and slowly decayed… the tires rotted and went flat, the gasoline in the tank turned to varnish, rust began to eat away at the body and frame, and even a family of raccoons got inside and made it their home.

Cletus’ sister/wife told him that their brother just bought an old BlueBird school bus to use in a destruction derby. Since the front yard was already full of cars, she said the old U-Haul van had to go to make room for the bus.

Cletus talked several of his buddies about his situation and asked for some ideas on what to do with his “perfectly good van”. Someone suggested removing the van body and make a buggy for night hunting. Another had an idea to convert it to a four wheel drive van with heavy-duty suspension to race in the annual off-road Redneck Rally. Yet another friend mentioned that they could win the blue ribbon at the county fair for the most extreme stunt vehicle. Cletus liked all these ideas so much he wanted to do EVERYTHING.

So Cletus and his friends got together and, along with an unlimited supply of PBR, got busy making modifications. They pulled the van body from the frame and built a full roll cage. Next, they dropped in a large 400ci small block Chevy engine a buddy had sitting in his shed. Then they replaced the stock 2wd drivetrain with 4wd. Someone then came up with a brilliant idea of adding rear steer to help navigate the tight turns in the Redneck Rally.

The Redneck Van Buggy Thing is the result. It’s a stunt van that can do things no van has done before. It can perform flips on its own. It transforms into a hunting buggy. It has the power to perform endless donuts and climb the steepest of inclines. It has the torque to pop a wheelie in reverse. The rear steer keeps it stable in the most extreme of maneuvers. But, as they discovered, there is such a thing as too much power… the Van Buggy can explode spectacularly if driven too hard. That said, this is the most extreme van buggy ever built by a bunch of drunk rednecks.
