The Yukikaze (DDS-117) (ゆきかぜ, Yukikaze) was an Isokaze-class Space Assault Destroyer active during the Garmillas War under the command of Mamoru Kodai.
It served during the First Battle of Pluto, being the last ship to be sunk during the hostilities. While members of its crew were taken captive by Garmillas, its wreck crashed on the saturnian moon of Enceladus.
History
The Yukikaze served in the vanguard unit for the UNCF fleet for Operation M, launching in July of 2198,[4] months prior to the rest of the fleet, and arriving in the vicitnites of Pluto moments before the rest of the First Fleet.[1] It was equipped with a new type of protype space torpedo capable of sinking Garmillas ships.[5]
Mamoru Kodai had the Yukikaze immediately turned around and quickly sped off at maximum speed to assist the heavily outgunned and outnumbered Earth fleet, once it became clear that the enemy fleet had cleverly set up and ambushed them. The Yukikaze arrived too late to find most of the Earth fleet nearly destroyed, all except the Earth flagship Kirishima, which was very badly damaged and loosing many crew in the process. The Yukikaze quickly came to Kirishima’s aid and sank a Garmillas destroyer that was attempting to ram the Kirishima. Admiral Juzo Okita onboard the Kirishima then ordered the crew of the destroyer Yukikaze to retreat and to follow them back to Earth once the operation had succeeded in allowing an Iscandarian spacecraft time to deliver a wave motion core.[1]
The Yukikaze’s crew decided to have their ship serve as bait so the flagship Kirishima could escape back to Earth, despite being ordered to return to Earth by Admiral Juzo Okita. The Yukikaze then charged into battle, despite being outnumbered and outgunned by the enemy fleet, while also managing to destroy another Garmillas warship in the process, before taking heavy damaged and being destroyed in an explosion.[1] The Garmillans took members of the Yukikaze's crew as prisoners, including Mamoru Kodai and his XO Eiji Ishizu.[6]
The Yukikaze's wreck crash landed on Enceladus. The space battleship Yamato arrived weeks later to investigate its automated SOS signal. after the Yamato survived a Garmillas attack the crew placed a memorial dedicated to the sacrifice of all of the 24 crew members of the Yukikaze.[7]
