Sputnik 1 was the first ever man made satellite to enter orbit. This simple satellite carried no onboard systems or scientific measures, except a simple sound emitter. Scientists studied this and later helped in the conclusion that sound does not travel in space. The R-7 that transported this satellite was used for many missions that occurred after for having effective engines able to transport objects into low earth orbit. The USSR made use of this rocket for many years, starting with propelling the Soviet Union towards the lead until the moon landing. Which ultimately ended the race, with the United States winning.
