Reusable Heavy Lift System capable of delivering payloads to 100km orbit with automated circularization
The Atlas VIII Heavy, also known as Heavy Lift System, is the first reusable heavy-lift vehicle of the Atlas Space Program (excluding its solid fuel boosters).
The Heavy is composed of two primary modules:
Heavy Booster Stage – the main stage and the component that gives the rocket its name
ACUS Module – responsible for transporting large payloads to higher orbits than the Super Freighter, as well as providing additional delta-v for missions to other celestial bodies
Engineers within the program are currently studying modifications to the ACUS Module to increase its payload capacity beyond the limits of its current cargo bay.
With a total height of 116 meters and a mass of 4.62 kilotons, the Atlas VIII Heavy is currently the largest and most powerful rocket in the Atlas fleet.
Each unit has an estimated production cost of 687.9 million, although thanks to reusable stages, the operational cost is reduced to approximately 50 million per launch (mainly for solid boosters and refurbishment).
At present, the program operates a single active Heavy unit, maintained through strict safety and recovery procedures that ensure reliable reuse of its main stages.
The Heavy has a complete Vizzy system to automatically reach orbit without player intervention.
Note: The Heavy Booster doesn't yet have a complete recovery system; if anyone finds a way to implement one, please let me know.
