Sorry if this is a previously-addressed topic, but does atmospheric friction ever produce a visual indication (that is, do things ever glow when they get hot)? I purposely built a craft to re-enter the atmosphere at high speed (>4000m/s) and it had a heat shield. I saw the temperate rise >3000F (or C, I dunno) but the heat shield never glowed red or orange.
Am I missing something?
