They'd have to be cheap and lightweight otherwise the contract payment might need changing, good idea though, it seemed unrealistic that you can just leave a random guy in orbit for 300 years with nothing but a spacesuit.
Biggest problem is the fact that this is a game played by normal people and not scientists (But as you said it is optional), maybe there could be habitats for colonies which need life support, eventually they become self-sustaining.
Definitely needs to be optional.
