Engine exhaust disappears after craft gets too far away from custom camera

Set a camera connected to a part on the ground with an interstage connected to the craft.
Switch to the custom camera.
Disconnect the craft and fly away.
Once the craft is about 5-10km away, the engine exhaust disappears
