A competitor game Kerbal Space Program has characters. This would add a whole new level to this game. You may be able to do Multiplayer and add a survival element to the game as in oxygen production/supply, food, water etc. That would get many youtubers into this sandbox game and give a great revenue to you devs as well because not many people know about Simple Planes or Simple Rockets because there is many other games out there that exceed the level this game does with multiplayer, character ability's, survival elements, and items that grab youtubers and players interest.

I think Jundroo could expand on the whole "dummy" aesthetic by having robotic astronauts, it would set the game apart while adding a "playable character" dimension to the game. A robotic character would have no need for facial expressions and they could have their own kind of "charm" in a sense. However I could see why others might prefer characters that are more "flesh and blood".
That said I think any "survival" mechanic should be minimal and only as part of career mode missions while gathering data/resources, and should not be the primary goal of career mode, except in missions where establishing a "permanent colony" is the main objective. In terms of multiplayer, although I agree it would be nice to see I don't necessarily think it is a must-have for this type of game, what we have essentially is a space program simulator which will (potentially) have a career mode that might revolve around space exploration and gathering scientific data, I don't see a survival mechanic or multiplayer as really necessary, and again any survival is only necessary in a career mode only as far as you don't want your astronaut to die while in a mission.
