Maybe the game engine prohibits this because it can only physics one vehicle at a time, but it would be useful if automation (suggested elsewhere) would still work in the background.

For example, a booster could be automated to boost-back after separation and fly back to land in a pad. Meanwhile, the user keeps flying the orbiter and does the circularisation burn.

    The crafts have physics, but they get unrendered if they're too far. I think that if you lock a direction with a craft and then change the control unit that craft will follow that direction (retrograde for example), but since we don't know telemetry in non controlled parts and engines turn off it's impossible to use input controllers to do this right now.
    I hope they will change how crafts are rendered, at least in the PC version
