Some small thrusters which could help redirect detached radial stages would be pretty useful. They stuck in my ship a few times D:

Ah, right, if we get solid rocket boosters then it's doable using subassemblies :)

You could add a very small engine + fuel tank that points away from the main craft.
Once they will add solid rocket boosters than just use that instead of liquid engine + fuel tank.
