@AndrewGarrison I'm not really a fan of it as I was trying to listen to something in the background as the game was paused. There should at least be an option to disable the sound upon pausing.

This is actually intentional. They are muffled to give the pause a bit of a different feel and the intention was to make it not feel so dead and empty while in the menu.
