How they work (From what I know):
basically Solar sails are made of really thin and spread out Aluminum and provide their vessel with a means of propulsion when hit with Solar Radiation (and photons), the more photons hitting, the faster it goes, ofcourse they'd need to be insanely large, also, with it being propelled by photons hitting the Aluminum sheet, we could therefore mount lasers on the craft (in JNO I guess we could just use spotlights I guess yet they'd have to be very concentrated) to propel it when Solar radiation becomes redundant (in the outskirts of a system).
How they could be deployed:
just to help the devs perhaps, maybe they could be deployed like Solar panels via activation group and look something like curtains
Yet maybe with 2 poles, 1 at the top and 1 at the bottom for stability and even weight on crafts whichd require 2 on each side.
Modifiability
In terms of modifications, and changing shape, perhaps use Arrows, in terms of editing characteristics, I think we should be able to edit their deployment speed and maybe even material? (For career purposes we may utilize cheaper albeit inefficient ones for testing solar sails in career, and then realizing what we can use it for and possibly get contracts accordingly)
What this'd mean for Stars:
Look, imma try help the devs as much as I can (despite having no coding experience). So for stars what I think could be done is splitting its SOI into Solar Radiation zones with varying intensity ofcourse, with the inner most system having the most intense solar winds (since it's fresh out the star and heck not even that big), and the outer systems having the Least activity (since it every far away). Zones could be split accordingly with a unit for solar Radiation activity (e.g 1), e.g the devs could mark an Inner system zone and mark it as 1-0,875; the Middle system 0,875-0,500: then the outer system 0,500-0,050; this is just an example it isnt going to be accurate, it's just to represent the concept, and the further out we go, the more it decreases gradually as we get closer to the outer system.
Artificial Light
With this maybe the devs can also make zones as I did explain with the stars, yet also Intensity would affect the lights impact on the sail.
