I know ion engines arent really known for its amazing thrust and they are pretty realistic how they are right now but in terms of gameplay there is no reason to use them. I'd suggest bumping up the thrust to about 100N and decreasing the amount of electricity it needs to something like 100kW to make it somewhat reasonable to use the Ion engine.

I reckon the Ruderford engine would be a real cool engine to have because it uses electrisity and rocket fule. if you wan't to know more just look up rocket lab (don't build the Election please I wan't to make it 1st)

I wrote an essay a long time ago persuading Jundroo to nerd it, and they did.

@Bmcclory i cant really come up with a desingn that works well with them. For example i built a craft that got a 250kg ion probe to droo orbit. From there it would have taken me 70 periapsis burns just to get an encounter with the moon. After each burn i had to time warp several in game days to recharge the batteries with solar panels. I think the electricity needed to run them compared to the amount you can recharge with reasonably sized solar panels is too high.

They are meant for small things, and when paired with small things they are actually good, I used it for my Urados mission.

I think they are good as they are. Useful for small corrections needed to encounter the other planets. In fact they are comparatively better than the other engines, which are purposely inefficient because making them perform like real-life engines would make the game too easy. Real ion engines have similar Isp and power consumptions.
