Who do you think will get to mars first, SpaceX’s Big Falcon Rocket or NASA’s Space Launch System. I personally believe SpaceX will get there first because they don’t have such a restrained budget. (Either way I’m rooting for both because they both have amazing teams and rockets.)

@Jetspeed1001 it needs to be flat smooth land to land on almost any material

@Jetspeed1001 but sometimes the parachute can fail to deploy which makes it fall so fast and kills the animals or humans on board the spacecraft

@Jetspeed1001 SpaceX use engines to land because parachutes are so unpredictable and would be more likely to have the booster fall into the ocean than land on the drone ship, making it impossible to reuse if it is touched by saltwater.

@uzair1903 @DPSAircraftManufacturer Parachutes are a better choice. Why would you need a rocket that can land upright using engines? tbh it's just a waste of money. they could be using the extra fuel needed for landing to get out of the atmosphere, plus, you need a ship to be there for them to land on, and also, the chances of it exploding while landing are much higher than if it was using a parachute to land.

In terms of rockets, SpaceX ALMOST wins, but NASA just wins with the Saturn-V, but in terms of exploration, NASA wins.

@Diver They are already doing it, for example the Dragon1 and Dragon2, they are made for re-supply the ISS, wich is in it's mayority made by NASA.

I think they should join forces.

Has any one playing simple rockets gotten to Mars yet?

The budget for NASA compared to the Defence budget is completely ridiculous @BaconAircraft I totally agree.

You can't compare the two. They have completely separate goals. SpaceX makes money while NASA further enlarges our understanding of space. Also, NASA (apart from the SLS) no longer makes their own rockets, using contracted company's launch vehicles. Thanks to the recent budget cut, they barely have enough funds to send probes out. Comparing the two is simply not right. THEY ARE EQUALLY GREAT.

Also just to put into perspective, NASA gets 18.3B dollars to answer the world's most important question while the "Defense" budget is a whopping 590B just to ensure nonexistant "freedom" by bombing some tents in the middle east.

SpaceX for the win. I think the private organisation can only get bigger, where-as NASA seems pretty quiet.

And spacex can land on Mars first

I choose spacex because of of the landing legs nasa still uses parachutes gross

@JoshMan Fair point, I had the privilege of getting to see parts of the Orion Capsule and it definitely displays NASA’s mastery in their field.

Sending humans? NASA for sure... BFR still needs to be built and human tested. Considering the dragon capsule has taken years of refinement and testing before being human rated (officially coming this dec) I think it's fair to say NASA is ahead of the curve.
